چکیده

After an introduction to Heuristic-Driven Theory Projection (HDTP) as framework for computational analogy-making, and a compact primer on parametrized complexity theory, we provide a complexity analysis of the key mechanisms underlying HDTP, together with a short discussion of and reflection on the obtained results. Amongst others, we show that restricted higher-order antiunification as currently used in HDTP is W [1]-hard (and thus NP-hard) already for quite simple cases. Also, we obtain W[2]-hardness, and NP-completeness, for the original mechanism used for reducing second-order to first-order antiunifications in the basic version of the HDTP system.

Solving Geometric Proportional Analogies with the Analogy Model HDTP

Intelligence tests often use geometric proportional analogies to examine the intelligence quotient of humans. Completing such a series of geometric figures can be a cognitively demanding task, because the solution requires a suitable conceptualization of the geometric figures. Furthermore, there might exist several, equally correct solutions depending on the conceptualization. In this paper, we...

On the Logical Formalization of Analogies and Theory Blending in the HDTP Framework

Analogies are considered a cognitive core mechanism, that is applied in many everday reasoning processes. Heuristic-driven theory projection (HDTP) is a logic-based framework that allows to model analogies with the aim of making analogical reasoning techniques available for artificial intelligence systems. The formal properties of HDTP are investigated, refining and extending some of the origin...

Using Gestalt Principles to Compute Analogies of Geometric Figures

Analogy making is a highly sophisticated cognitive process in which two stimuli are compared and analyzed for common patterns. Analogical reasoning is the adaptation of knowledge about one stimulus such that it can be applied to the second stimulus and new analogous inferences can be drawn. Analogy making requires intelligence, since such analogous patterns and transfers often are not obvious a...

Remarks on the Meaning of Analogical Relations

Analogical reasoning plays an important role in the context of higher cognitive abilities of humans. Analogies can be used not only to explain reasoning abilities of humans, but also to explain learning from sparse data, creative problem solving, abstractions of concrete situations, and recognition of formerly unseen situations, just to mention some examples. Research in AI and cognitive scienc...

Ontological Aspects of Computing Analogies

In AI, there is an increasing interest in examining ontologies for a variety of applications. Classical ontologies can have different forms ranging from lattice-like structures (Ganter & Wille, 1996) to less restricted semantic networks (Peters & Shrobe, 2003). Analogical reasoning has a long tradition in cognitive science and AI. The monograph Gentner, Holyoak & Kokinov (2001) is a good summar...
